Another day of rain and storms will target the Central U.S. as the potential for a weekend washout could impact a dozen states. FOX Weather Meteorologists Craig Herrera and Melanie Black have the latest forecast and what this means for your weekend.

Severe thunderstorms are set to return across portions of the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest, bringing large hail and damaging winds to the region.

According to the FOX Forecast Center, the severe weather threat will impact the area Monday before shifting toward heavy rain and flash flooding across parts of the Midwest by the middle of the week.

Starting Monday, the severe weather threat will focus on eastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota, where the Storm Prediction Center has issued a Level 2 out of 5 risk for severe storms.

Storms are expected to develop in the morning, but by the afternoon, the atmosphere is expected to recover as warm, humid air moves back into the region.

New storms are then expected to form along an approaching cold front, with large hail and damaging wind gusts as the primary threats.

The FOX Forecast Center said isolated tornadoes cannot be ruled out, but the overall tornado threat appears limited.

Farther south across South Dakota and Nebraska, only isolated storms are expected. However, any storm that do develop could produce hail and strong wind gusts.

By Tuesday and Wednesday, the cold front will slow down as it moves into the Midwest, allowing rounds of showers and thunderstorms to develop.

Forecasters expect some areas could see rainfall rates between 1 and 2 inches per hour.

The flooding threat is expected to increase Wednesday night into early Thursday, especially from southern Iowa and northern Missouri into northern Illinois, including the Chicago area, and southern Wisconsin.
