Dave Hughes has publicly thrown his support behind Australia’s Liberal party after voting for Labor his entire adult life.

The comedian, who has been vocal in his condemnation of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese‘s government in recent months, announced on Wednesday that he will be backing leader of the Opposition Jess Wilson in the upcoming Victorian election.

‘I’ve spoken to her, and I said, “Just be honest”. If I could find any politician who is honest, I’d be happy,’ the 55-year-old told news.com.au.

‘We need to get all public spending on a register that we can see because corruption is off the charts. They don’t think it’s real money, so they just take it!’

Previously a lifelong Labor voter, Hughes says that the party lost his support over recent taxation changes.

‘It is disgusting; we should never vote Labor. You can’t change the tax system without letting me vote on it. It is disgraceful,’ he said.

‘We are being played… and the parliamentary system is a disgrace and needs a complete overhaul!

‘I know I sound like a cooker, but it is f**king crazy!’

Hughes, a successful property investor, has become a fierce critic of the Albanese government and has launched into a series of tirades on Instagram since the May Federal Budget.

He was particularly critical of the changes to negative gearing and the 50 per cent capital gains tax discount.

‘Guys, they lied to Australia and you cannot do that,’ Hughes said earlier this year.

‘This has cost the whole country so much money already, the housing market has tanked, they’ve cost every Australian who owns a home probably 15 per cent of their housing value, you can’t lie about that Jim and Albo, you can’t do that.’

Hughes called the Albanese government an ‘absolute disgrace’ and said their decision will cause the economy to suffer.

‘The people in charge of our country are idiots, they treat our money like they found it in a sack by the river and they’ve got to spend it before someone finds out,’ he said.

‘The Federal Government is $1 trillion in debt, I get on planes and I walk past them, and they’re all in business class because they couldn’t care less about being $1 trillion in debt… it’s not their money… what do they care?’

Hughes slammed the government as spending money ‘like drunken sailors’.

‘It actually affects everyone because hardworking people have to earn that money and you take half off them and blow it on absolute rubbish, it’s annoying,’ Hughes said.

‘We are sick of them stealing our money and especially for first homebuyers.’

Meanwhile, Dave has admitted that his wife is not impressed with his recent interest in political commentary.

His wife of 20 years, Holly, has been discouraging the media personality from speaking out.

‘She doesn’t like it, she says that I shouldn’t be political,’ Hughes told The Fox’s Fifi, Fev & Nick radio show.

Despite her concerns, Hughes said that he has seen the positive impact of his comments after being approached by everyday Aussies who appreciate his speaking up.

‘I’m walking down the street, and people are coming out of shops; they’re stopping their ute in the middle of the road and running at me. [I’m thinking] I’m gonna get bashed, and they just want to hug me,’ he said.
