Cedric Alexander’s first Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA) X Division Championship defense came at Slammiversary on Sunday night and he had the daunting task of retaining the title in an Ultimate X match.

It was the 55th Ultimate X match in TNA history with Alexander going up against Amazing Red, Frankie Kazarian, Fabian Aichner, Leon Slater, KC Navarro and Mr. Elegance. It was also Red’s first appearance in a TNA ring in about 15 years. To win, the competitor had to climb one of the pillars, shimmy their way on the cables high above the ring and grab the belt.

Alexander, Kazarian, Red and Aichner all tried to go after the belt at the same time. Alexander slipped and took down Aichner. Red and Kazarian both dropped to the mat. It allowed Red and Kazarian to showcase whatever they have left in the tank. Elegance tried to take advantage of everyone being out of the ring, but Navarro shut down his chances.

Red stepped into the ring with Navarro and delivered a Code Red. He then did the same to Kazarian. He tried to go up for the title but Slater caught him.

Slater gained some momentum when he realized his path to get the title was blocked. He hit a double blockbuster to take out Aichner, Elegance, Kazarian and Navarro. He then tried to race Red to the title in the middle of the cable line. Slater had the belt unhooked as he and Red dangled from the wires.

But Alexander came into the ring and stole the belt out of Slater’s hands.

He was determined the winner because neither Slater nor Red touched the mat.

Alexander initially won the X Division Championship from Slater, ending his shot at history. He will keep that belt for the moment.
