15-year-old dies after drowning in flooded retention pond in Texas

Life-threatening flooding continues to batter the Gulf Coast as Potential Tropical Cyclone One’s chances of development loom. Tragically, one drowning death has been confirmed in Texas, and tropical storm alerts remain in effect across parts of the Louisiana coast. Latest:

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas – Officials have confirmed the death of a 15-year-old teenager who drowned Tuesday after walking into a flooded retention pond in the Magnolia area.

Texas has been dealing with life-threatening flash flooding triggered by Potential Tropical Cyclone (PTC) One as it churns off the Gulf Coast.

At around 6 p.m. local time, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call regarding a missing juvenile and immediately launched a large-scale search operation.

According to officials, a group of teenagers was playing near a construction roadway and adjacent retention pond when the 15-year-old entered the water and failed to resurface.

A massive multi-unit search was coordinated, with boats and specialized diving teams deployed. 

Following an extensive search and the use of sonar technology, the teenager was located submerged in the water and pronounced deceased at the scene, according to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.

A death investigation is being conducted as standard protocol, and the sheriff’s office has extended its deepest condolences to the family.

Officials would also like to remind the public of the dangers of floodwaters, especially following heavy downpours.

That said, PTC One will continue to bring days of heavy tropical rain across the South this week, putting millions at risk from eastern Texas to Georgia.
