WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — The FIFA Fan Zone on the National Mall welcomed soccer fans to watch the World Cup as hundreds watched Mexico beat South Africa 2-0 on Thursday afternoon.
The FIFA Fan Zone will feature nearly every match on a big screen every day throughout the five-week tournament. It’s all part of the Trump administration’s Freedom 250 celebrations.
“We just scored, man! It’s the second goal!” said Edson Contreras, cheering for Mexico.
Excitement was in the air for the opening match of the FIFA World Cup.
“It’s a celebration where a lot of people come together, and there’s a lot of happiness too, and there’s a lot of people from a lot of different countries,” said Edwin Chinchilla.
Some showed up to support their teams while others came for the energy of the space, even playing some soccer of their own.
“I was playing the five inside with my boy here. He won us the game. Really good player. Vamos!” said Benjamin Shoma.
It’s not just the live matches on the big screen. There are also interactive exhibits, activities for kids, cultural showcases, food, and music.
“I wanted to see Mexico be more productive. It’s okay. We’ll take the 2-0,” said Juan Cruz.
Organizers say it’s a family-friendly atmosphere that’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance to celebrate both the World Cup and 250 years of independence.
“Whenever there are games, no matter where and no matter who’s playing, you’re going to be able to watch the games here on the very big screen,” said Jaime Florez, spokesperson for the Republican National Committee.
It’s an opportunity for different cultures to be part of a melting pot.
“I have been to different World Cups, and it’s the same thing, the environment, the people. Everyone’s coming to support their teams, and it becomes kind of a time to get together and enjoy something that everyone loves,” Contreras said.
It’s free and open to the public every day through July 19. You just have to go through a quick security screening. Gates open an hour before the first match of the day and close an hour after the last match.
