Daniel Peddle’s seminal twin documentaries on queer life, The Aggressives and Beyond the Aggressives: 25 Years Later, have been picked up by The Criterion Channel and are now available to stream.
The Aggressives first premiered in 2005 at SXSW and has since become a landmark piece of non-fiction filmmaking for its intimate portrait of masculine-presenting lesbians and trans men of color living in New York City at the turn of the millennium.
In 2023, Peddle returned with Beyond the Aggressives: 25 Years Later, revisiting four of the original participants—Kisha, Trevon, Octavio, and Chin—to explore how their lives, and the cultural conversation surrounding gender identity, have evolved over the past quarter-century. Showtime acquired the film.
“This was never just about documenting a subculture,” said Peddle. “It was about humanity, connection, survival, and allowing people to define themselves in their own words.”
Producer Wellington Love, who was a key member of the crew on both films, added: “I was fortunate to have been involved in launching the theatrical publicity campaign for the 2005 film, so I was honored when Daniel asked if I’d like to come on board as a producer for Beyond The Aggressives.”
Beyond the Criterion release, Peddle is next set to direct Rose Moon, a psychological drama starring Gabourey Sidibe. The film is said to follow Rose King, a lonely North Carolina probation officer whose affair with a parolee spirals into obsession, placing her career at risk. The film will be produced by Tyler Stephenson for Coffee Robot, alongside Anton Palmér, Brian Pendleton for Drama Kween Productions, and Wellington Love for w/Love Productions.
The Aggressives and Beyond the Aggressives: 25 Years Later are now streaming on The Criterion Channel.
