How Mika Abdalla’s Off Campus fame poisoned her engagement to ex Jake Short… and the heartbreaking truth of his feelings for her

Mika Abdalla won the hearts of fans around America as the leading lady’s best friend on the buzzy new college show Off Campus.

As her star ascended, her admirers cheered what appeared to be her equally flourishing private life, in the shape of her five-year romance with Jake Short.

Short and Abdalla co-starred in the 2022 Hulu teen comedy Sex Appeal and ignited an offscreen romance that lent a bit of added sizzle to their onscreen chemistry.

His manager confirmed last year that Short, 29, and Abdalla, 26, had gotten engaged – only for her representative to disclose this Tuesday that they have since split.

Now a source has exclusively pulled back the curtain on how Abdalla’s rom com fame proved to be the fly in the ointment of her love life.

The insider exposed the heartbreaking truth of Short’s enduring feelings for Abdalla, telling the Daily Mail: ‘He’d take her back in a heartbeat.’

Heartbreaking new details have emerged about the broken engagement of Mika Abdalla and Jake Short, who are pictured in Los Angeles this February

‘Mika and Jake were genuinely smitten with one another and deeply in love, but relationships in Hollywood can become complicated when one person’s career starts demanding more and more of their attention,’ the source explained.

‘There wasn’t a dramatic breakup or a major fight. Instead, as Mika’s career looks to grow into something special, she has found herself increasingly focused on professional opportunities rather than settling down and building a life with someone.’

The insider cited ‘timing’ as a ‘significant’ wedge issue, saying: ‘Jake was ready to move toward starting a family in the next few years as he lost his father when he was younger, so he always wanted to be a dad at a young age.’

However it emerged that ‘taking the next steps in their future together was something sooner than Mika felt comfortable with.’

The couple’s ‘efforts of making it work’ ultimately came to naught as ‘they couldn’t align on what they wanted or when they wanted it. And that became their normal.’

Said the source: ‘Their relationship was full of love, and perhaps the most positive aspect of their split is that there is no real animosity between them.’

Abdalla and Short ‘simply grew apart because of what is happening professionally, with some deeply personal things sprinkled in as well. From Mika’s perspective especially, her career has become a much larger priority, and over time those changing priorities led the romantic feelings between them to fade.’

Based on a series of hit novels by Elle Kennedy, Off Campus premiered on Amazon Prime Video last month and was instantly showered with acclaim.

Should careers always take priority over relationships, or is love worth sacrificing professional dreams?

Ella Bright leads the show as a music major called Hannah, who strikes up a fake relationship with her college’s hockey star Garrett (Belmont Cameli) in order to inflame the jealousy of the actual object of her affections, Justin (Josh Heuston).

Sparks inevitably fly between Garrett and Hannah when she tutors him for one of his classes as payback for his participation in her ruse.

Abdalla features on the show as Hannah’s roommate and best friend Allie Hayes, a key supporting part that has propelled her to new heights of notoriety.

She has already begun filming season two, which will follow the development of Allie’s own romance with Garrett’s teammate Dean (Stephen Kalyn).

‘I truly love working with Stephen so much,’ Abdalla raved to The Hollywood Reporter last week. ‘We’re also very similar actors in our insecurities and doubts.’

She and Short, who have both been acting since childhood, first got to know each other in 2021 while filming Sex Appeal in New York City.

‘I came over just to say hi, and we ended up talking, not about the script, just talking and getting to know each other for hours,’ she said on the podcast The American High in 2024. ‘I was like, wait, this guy is actually really cool and sweet and great.’

They quietly got engaged last year, a development that went public via an Instagram post from Short’s manager Brian Medavoy that May.

‘An awesome day yesterday celebrating the next chapter for my longtime client, Jake Short and his fiancée Mika Abdalla,’ wrote Brian, the son of film mogul Mike Medavoy. ‘From set to real life – watching your journey has been a joy. Here’s to forever.’

The love story had come to an end by this Tuesday, when a representative for Abdalla broke the news of their split to Us Weekly.

‘Due to recent interest in Mika’s personal life it would feel remiss to not address that her and Jake are no longer together,’ the statement ran. ‘They continue to support each other and remain on friendly terms, and kindly ask for privacy and respect.’
