With summer approaching, it’s likely you have one or two barbecues pencilled in the diary.
But the next time someone hands you a juicy burger, it could be worth flipping it over before tucking in.
Experts argue that doing so provides your burger with better support, as the thicker part of the bun is now on the bottom.
It can also prevent fillings from sliding out and stops sauces dripping out the side.
Zac’s Hamburgers, an American chain, wrote on X: ‘The crown is generally thicker than the heel so you should actually flip it upside–down to eat it.
‘The crown will hold the weight and there is less likelihood of it falling apart.’
Some people have argued that flipping it ‘feels wrong’ while others said they ‘don’t trust people that eat their burger upside–down’.
However, others claimed ‘only smart people know to eat the burger upside–down’ and said it’s the ‘proper way to eat a burger’.
Famz Peri Peri, a fast food shop in Ilford, shared a video showing a woman eating a burger upside down (left). Another user, from Ireland, shared a video eating a burger and said: ‘Does anybody eat their Big Mac upside–down?’
Flo Gardner-Hillman, Burger King new product development manager, told the Daily Mail: ‘There is some validation behind the upside-down burger trend as the crown of a bun, which is typically thicker, can act as a cradle by taking the weight of the patty and ingredients.
‘Some purists say you should never eat a burger upside, but at Burger King UK we say Have It Your Way – just make sure it is a Whopper.’
Heinz, best known for making condiments such as tomato ketchup, has also joined the upside–down burger hype.
It said there are three reasons to flip your burger – to get a more flavourful top bun, to keep the burger components from falling out and to provide easier access to the added sauces.
The company wrote in a blog post: ‘What if someone tells you that the best way to eat a burger is upside–down?
‘Since the thicker top bun will now be at the bottom, it’ll be able to soak up the meaty juices of the burger patty, making it more flavourful.’
It also pointed out that this could help keep the burger’s components from slipping, sliding and falling out of the bun.
Finally, it said the method will give your taste buds ‘immediate access’ to the condiments.
Burger King previously offered an ‘Upside Down’ burger as part of a partnership with the TV show Stranger Things
‘When you eat your burger the right side up, it usually takes a while before the condiments hit your taste buds,’ it added.
‘It might even drip to the sides of the burger instead of going into your mouth.’
Famz Peri Peri, a fast food shop in Ilford, has also got involved in the trend.
On TikTok it uploaded a video showing a woman eating a burger upside down.
‘The correct way to eat a burger is to flip it upside–down so you have the thick part of the bun that absorbs all the juice so it doesn’t fall apart,’ she said.
Another user, from Ireland, shared a video eating a burger and said: ‘Does anybody eat their Big Mac upside–down?
‘I’ll tell you why – if I do it with two hands, I feel like it all stays in.’
