Top psychiatrist reveals how reciting a 2,000-year-old biblical prayer rewires your brain

A leading psychiatrist has claimed that reciting a 2,000-year-old biblical prayer may physically reshape the human brain.

Dr Daniel Amen was a recent guest on the Mature Me podcast, hosted by Florida pastor Rich Wilkerson Jr, where he detailed the science behind saying the Lord’s Prayer.

The Lord’s Prayer, also known as the Our Father, is a foundational Christian prayer that, according to the Bible, Jesus taught his disciples when they asked him how to pray.

Amen, who is a devout Christian, broke down the prayer line-by-line, starting with the verse: ‘Our Father, in heaven, hallowed be your name.’

‘Right away, it activates your prefrontal cortex,’ he said, explaining that the opening lines of the prayer may activate the brain’s attachment systems and help shift the mind out of a threat response into a calmer state associated with safety and emotional stability.

Amen said the next line, ‘Give us this day our daily bread,’ settles the nervous system because the phrase focuses the brain on immediate needs rather than future fears.

One of the most neurologically powerful lines in the Lord’s Prayer, according to Amen, may be: ‘Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.’

Amen explained that many people ‘gloss over’ the verse without realizing what he believes it does to the brain. ‘It’s like he’s going to forgive you as you forgive. This is super important,’ Amen said.

While Amen described the prayer’s effects in neurological terms, scientists caution that many of the claims remain theoretical rather than conclusively proven through brain imaging studies.

Researchers have found that repetitive prayer and meditation can influence stress levels, emotional regulation and attention.

However, some experts say it is difficult to prove that specific lines of the Lord’s Prayer trigger precise neurological responses.

Studies have suggested that focused prayer can reduce activity in brain regions associated with fear while strengthening areas tied to concentration and emotional control.

Some researchers also believe rhythmic recitation may activate pathways linked to trust, empathy and emotional resilience.

Christian psychiatrist Dr April Joy has also discussed how the Lord’s Prayer may rewire the brain, providing a deeper breakdown of each phrase.

Joy said in an Instagram post that the phrase ‘Thy kingdom come’ may help orient the brain toward hope and future possibilities by engaging pathways linked to motivation and goal-directed thinking.

She suggested the line could help counter feelings of helplessness by reinforcing a forward-looking mindset focused on purpose and possibility.

The phrase ‘Thy will be done,’ according to Joy, may help calm the brain by encouraging people to let go of control and reduce overactivity linked to rumination and repetitive negative thinking.

She explained that surrender and acceptance are associated with lower stress levels and improved emotional regulation.

Joy then addressed the line ‘On earth as it is in heaven,’ arguing that aligning beliefs with actions may strengthen communication between the brain’s thinking and emotional centers.

She said this process can promote psychological stability by creating greater harmony between rational thought and emotional responses.

The psychiatrist claimed the prayer’s emphasis on forgiveness may also have measurable effects on stress levels and emotional balance.

Referring to the verse ‘As we forgive those who trespass against us,’ Joy said forgiveness can free the mind from chronic stress while helping restore emotional stability and what she described as ‘inner freedom.’

She also highlighted the phrase ‘Lead us not into temptation,’ which she said encourages people to rely on guidance rather than impulse or self-control alone.

According to Joy, this mindset may support clearer judgment and stronger impulse regulation by engaging areas of the brain tied to decision-making.

Another line she focused on was ‘But deliver us from evil,’ which she said may reassure the nervous system and reduce feelings of threat and fear.

Joy suggested that praying for protection could help calm the amygdala, the region of the brain heavily involved in processing fear and anxiety.

She said the prayer’s closing verse, ‘For Thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory,’ may redirect attention toward meaning, worship and purpose.

Joy argued that this sense of spiritual focus can help create feelings of peace and emotional renewal linked to reward and mood-regulating brain chemicals such as dopamine and serotonin.

While some experts caution that many of the claims remain theoretical, researchers studying prayer and neurotheology continue investigating how repetitive spiritual practices may influence stress, emotional regulation and neural activity over time.
