JOHNSTON, R.I. (WPRI) โ Vincent “Vin” DiMonte is no ordinary gym rat.
The 74-year-old retired lawyer is on a remarkable streak: he hasn’t missed a day of working out in more than 10 years.
“I have become quite chiseled,” he said. “I flex my muscles in the mirror to make myself look good.”
DiMonte’s happy place is the Planet Fitness on Hartford Avenue in Johnston, and his workout streak is certainly impressive.
“As of Friday, the streak will be 3,687 consecutive days, which is 10 years plus 41 days,” DiMonte explained. “I like the gym atmosphere because I do a variety of workouts that include arms, legs, back, and shoulders. It’s harder to do that outside so I like Planet Fitness better.”
DiMonte started exercising consistently after his uncle died in 2014. Even COVID-19 didn’t stop him โ he walked around town every day until the gym opened back up.
“I’ve been blessed with good health to be able to show up every day. I hardly get headaches or colds,” he said.
DiMonte says going to work out is like a job.
“Show up, dress up, and don’t give up. That’s my attitude,” he explained. “I try and be here between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. I meet my peeps every day and we reinforce each other.”
So does he plan on ending the streak?
“I don’t think so, why?” he said. “Why should I?”
DiMonte’s commitment to his community doesn’t end at the gym. He has donated more than 108 gallons of blood and platelets to the Rhode Island Blood Center and is an active parishioner at Saint Robert Bellarmine in Johnston.
