A female pedestrian was struck and killed Sunday in Playa Del Rey after a two-car collision caused one motorist to veer off the road and down onto the beach, fire officials confirmed.
The incident, according to a news release from the Los Angeles Fire Department, occurred just after 7 p.m. at 8255 South Vista Del Mar.
Details are limited and it’s unclear exactly how the crash occurred, but fire officials say the approximately 70-year-old driver who struck the woman and plummeted to the beach in his sustained minor injuries.
In video of the crash aftermath posted to the Citizen App, the man’s vehicle could be seen on the beach with heavy damage to most of the vehicle. The motorist was also seen speaking with police at the scene.
“Unfortunately, the (age unknown) female patient struck by the car is beyond medical help and determined deceased on scene,” fire officials said in the release.
A white canopy covered the victim’s body just behind where the crashed vehicle came to rest.
Preliminary reports suggest that the road, Vista Del Mar, was closed to traffic while investigators worked the scene.
No information was provided about the other second motorist involved in the accident.
So far, there is no indication that drugs and or alcohol were a factor in the crash, though police have not yet released any information about the ongoing investigation.
