A wrong-way crash left one person dead and four others hospitalized in West Covina Friday.

Police responded to the crash on the 1700 block of West Puente Avenue in West Covina at around 12:16 a.m.

Investigators said a male driver in a Toyota sedan was traveling on the wrong side of the road when he collided head-on with a Honda sedan carrying four people inside.

A male passenger in the Honda’s backseat was pronounced dead at the scene. The other passengers were transported to nearby hospitals in various conditions.

One person is in critical condition, one is in stable condition and the third person was treated and released from the hospital. They were only identified as two adult males and one adult female.

The wrong-way Toyota driver, who was the sole occupant of his car, was brought to the hospital in critical condition.

The circumstances leading up to the deadly crash remain unclear. No further details, including the wrong-way driver’s name, were released. The deceased victim’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

“The Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) responded to the scene and is conducting their investigation as to the cause of the traffic collision,” authorities said.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has information on the case is asked to call West Covina Police at 626-939-8688 and reference WCPD DR# 25-00969.
